El Salvador Montecarlos Estate Gesha

Fragrant notes of tangerine nectar and caviar lime with a subtle hint of white peppercorn

Carlos Batres lives on top of a volcano in a house made from lava rocks. He’s the fifth-generation owner of the mountain and the spectacular, sprawling coffee estate that covers it. Montecarlos is one of El Salvador’s largest and most renowned farms, boasting a history as rich as its soil. Shade-grown coffee trees line the outer slopes, reaching all the way up to the edge of the volcanic rim. Carlos chose this location—the highest peak of the mountain—to plant the coveted Gesha varietal. Ripe cherries are picked by hand and processed at the family mill, which dates to the 1870s.
